We need leadership that will get rid of bad laws and restore our personal liberty. Schuette has stated he would continue the policies of Mike Cox that destroy our families for federal incentives of Title IV of the social security act. MI needs Senate Majority leader Mike Bishop as its next AG he understands that our courts need to be reformed and the issues our families are dealing with in the current economic environment.
I agree with Joemaflage, Schuette's platform does seem a bit narrow-minded and simplistic. I visited Mike Bishop's AG site and found him to have a more level-headed approach to actually reform the court system, refocus the enforcement vision, and commit his energy to protect our liberties-- often overlooked by AGs.
Joemaflage-------So you are saying the reason we have so many people in prison is because of bad laws? Bad laws are violating your personal liberty? You can't smoke a joint on the main street without the fuzz taking you to jail, breaking up your family, and violating your personal liberty? Not prosecuting people for crimes is sort of a bad way to keep people out of prison. And don't blame the laws for breaking up families. Those people made a decision to break a law. It is their fault they screwed up. Their fault they were caught. Their fault they went to jail. And their fault that the family has to pay for it. Quite blaming other people. It is your mentality in society that has things so screwed up. Our local prosecutors already let just about everyone off the hook already. If they let anymore off without jail time, they may as well close the jail. You do the crime, then do the time.
Chris Take a look at how our family courts are funded. They consistantly produce negative outcomes on our family units because it is profitable to do so. Be it CPS like the situations you describe above or general custody and child support issues. The higher child support orders set and collected the more federal funds they collect. (Conflict of interest) CPS use to be about family RESTORATION however the federal incentives now require destruction of the family to maximize profits. We now have debtors prisons which are UnConstitutional. As a taxpayer it makes no sense to house someone in a jail or prison for petty crimes. I have seen people in prison for 5 years for taking a $1000 TV. Not only is it a bit excessive it costs the taxpayer around $40,000 a year to house that inmate. I do not think that is the best way to spend my money. Even beyound these issues we have a number of BAD laws that need to be repealed like Gun Laws, anything from the Patriot act, etc.
Chris, An attorney general does not only have a duty to oversee the prosecution of crimes in our states, but also a duty to see that the accused receive fair justice and due process, as well as making sure the police and county prosecutors do not overstep the laws they are supposed to prosecute. We should not have a one-dimensional AG.
Along the lines of your direct situation I would say smoking a joint likely will not be a direct threat to your kids might be to you esp. if done around my kids but I am not willing to pay the government to police what you do every minute of your life I do not support a police state and will not fund it. This goes along with the drunk driving laws as well. Do I think there was a need for drunk driving laws sure but when special interests and big government overstep I do not support that. I think if you have 1 beer etc. with a dinner you are likely not drunk by any means yet our laws do not reflect such. Bad Laws, No equality in our justice system, and courts who no longer rule based on our Constitution are more then a need for reform since I intend to give my children the Republic that was promised to the people not a police nation.
There is no doubt that people who break the law need to go to jail, the argument is changing the laws to better suit the public interest. If someone who isnt directly or indirectly causing harm to others is thrown in jail, thats a tragedy. Freedom is what the US is all about.
