Funny, I heard the only speaker from the public say that day: "Back when you were in Kindergarten, the citizens of this state passed an initiated law by a vote of 63% to 37% that allowed the people of this state certain rights under limited conditions. Today, the City Council will pass a law that makes that state law passed resoundingly back in 2008 effectively meaningless to the citizens of Ludington. I voted against the law back then, and I am still not OK with it, but that's not how democracy works. The majority rules, votes count, and laws are laws. A local law cannot overrule a state law. That's what will happen today if this passes. That will be unhealthy." If that isn't discussion about this ordinance, and a refutation of it, I don't know what is. Very unhealthy indeed.
While the present Medical Marijuana laws may have their flaws and loopholes,it WAS passed by a vast majority of voters. I ask the City Council when the moratorium on painkillers like Oxycontin and Vicodin will be passed. Presciption painkiller overdoses have now PASSED car accidents as the number one accidental killer of United States citizens. Don't take my word for it ,look it up ! This new Moritorium says to me "it's alot easier to just arrest everybody than figure out who is legal and who is not. So let's just keep using arresting Marijuana users as our cash cow"..........
Delores, the Ludington City Council has steadfastly ignored and/or modified Michigan state laws whenever they don't agree with them since long ago, it's a tradition here. Anyone remember the ancient traffic law that allowed turning right on a red signal after yielding? Yes, they also ignored that law by modifying each downtown stop light with a sign, no turns on red. That lasted about 2-3 years until they got enough ticket fines accumulated to catch up with the rest of the state. They just can't come into the present, preferring to live in the ancient past. It's petty and sickening much of the time too. The last video of the City council meeting had the speaker also noting that this is "unhealthy government" actions.
